The 24-70L would be a great walk around lens. One of the best, and it can produce a nice 35 to 50mm portrait range.

the question is a little confusing....but i'd say the lens, for me, would be most useful if i had a full frame camera shooting a wedding or live band.
the 24mm isn't as wide as most people would like it on a 1.6x crop camera as it turns into a 38mm. but if you have a 5d or a 1ds it would be a VERY useful focal length.
the only other thing about the 24-70 that makes it special is the constant f/2.8 aperture. makes it a great indoor low(ish)light lens.
from personal experience(as i used to own this lens before i traded up for the 17-55), i used it as my main lens. it got use at anything from weddings to studio portraits to motorcycle stunt shows. it was a very sharp lens and it wasn't an easy decision to get rid of it.

Taking pictures.
I use mine to beat off all the beautiful women who invariably mob me every time I leave the house.
Although, now that you mention it, taking pictures might work too.
