I'm looking for a small digital camera as a gift for my wife. I'd like something small that she can carry in a small purse, but I'd also like one that doesn't have the typical "delay" between when you press the button and when the picture is taken.... so that the camera will be better for action shots.
Is there such an animal? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Budget

$200 to $300 - cheaper is better!!!

Size

Compact.

Features

6 megapixels minimum, Standard 3x-4x zoom or better

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
9-10

Do you care for manual controls? ??

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? Take along when a large SLR camera is too bulky to carry. Evening's out, hiking trips etc.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Typically 4x6 prints, 8x10 would be nice, but not absolutly necessary.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Yes. I prefer not to have a delay between when I press the button and when the photo is taken.

Miscellaneous. I prefer to have a viewfinder in addition to LCD display. I find it haard to use an LCD display on bright days.

Are there particular brands you like or hate? No

Are there particular models you already have in mind? No

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

This one is real simple. Say "hello" to Sony's W-series.

Thanks Kelly,
I just went and checked out the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150 and it does appear to be exactly what I'm looking for. I assume that is one of the W series cameras you referenced.

Yup. But if you can dig up one of the older W80 or W90 models that may be even faster yet.

May I join this thread? How do I determine the "delay"?
I'm looking at Nikon S51, Fuji 100fd, Olympus 1020 and
Panasonic DMC-500 for the same reason.

Until some online review site has tested them, you really can't know. I've found this particular web page handy, but it does not list every camera -
