canon 40d and speedlite 580

My friend Dave has a canon 40d and speedlite 580, we were wondering how to shoot and use the speedlite off the camera hand held?

i dont think the 40d has remote flash capabilities so you need some remote triggers.

He said "handheld" - hence my suggestion for the OC-E3. If he wanted to mount the 580 on a light stand, etc, the st-e2 is a good suggestion.
