NEED WEATHERPROOF SLR CAMERA FOR HIKING AND LOW LIGHT

Budget

OF SECONDARY IMPORTANCE -- I WILL CONSIDER ALL SLR CAMERAS THAT MEET MY NEEDS,

Size

OF SECONDARY IMPORANTACE -I WILL CONSIDER ALL SLR CAMERAS THAT MEET MY NEEDS,

(Other featuares more importnat , But all things otherwise equal will prefer smaller lighter)

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you? PREFER 10 OR MORE but would consider less if it were the only camera that otherwise met my needs

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify) STANDARD OK , more zoom might be a benefit

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10) VERY 8

Do you care for manual controls? YES BUT OF SECONDARY IMPORTANCE

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? PHOTOS WHILE HIKING, FAMILY SHOTS,

I TEND TO TAKE LOTS OF QUICK SHOTS, SINCE I OFTEN WILL BE HIKING WITH OTHERS SO I DON'T USUALLY HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO
SET UP SHOT I DO OCCASSIONALLY WANT CAPACITY FOR FINE ADJUSTMENTS, BUT OFTEN WILL BE SATISFIED WITH POINT AND SHOOT

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? OCCASSIONALLY

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? YES VERY IMPORTANT

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? NO

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? NO

Are there particular models you already have in mind? I DONT KNOW IF PENTAX K20,OR OLYMPUS E-3 WOULD , MEET MY CRITERIA, OR IF THERE ARE OTHERS

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

WIDE ANGLE -- NOT NECESSARY , I PREFER RATIO 4:3

WEATHERPROOF VERY VERY IMPORTANT: iI WOULD LIKE WEATHERPROOF CAMERAS -- AT LEAST ABLE TO WITHSTAND TAKING PICTURES IN THE RAIN

ESSENTIAL LOW LIGHT CAPABILITY, (THOUGH I BELIEVE ANY SLR WOULD BE OK HERE)

RAW CAPACITY, (AGAIN I SUSPECT ANY SLR WOULD HAVE THIS)

POINT AND SHOOT CAPACITY WITH LIVE VIEW IN LANDSCAPE MODE --, ESSENTIAL --UNLESS I CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS SOME OTHER WAY

IMAGE STABILIZATION (EITHER BODY OR WITH WITH IS LENS) ESSENTIAL

MORE DETAILS

I like to take photos while hiking, and camping, and backpacking, and also but less frequently family photos.
Often I find best shots are in the rain or drizzle, or at imes or places that are dusty, and so would likek a camera that can take photos in those conditions.

A camera that could be briefly submerged would be a nice bonus, but not absolutely essential

My current camera is the pentax w 20, which does an OK job for me except in lowlight morning and evening when I get the best light, so I would like
a camera with a larger sensor, and an anti shake image stabilization capacity either in body or lens. I have concluded I won't be able to get this except with a SLR camera, and I also would like RAW capacity for my best shots.

I will not be changing lenses, because of time and concern about dust, so I will want one lens , probably with standard zoom, but I want it to be weather proof with image stabilization, unless the camera itself has image stabilization built in.

I want the camera to be comfortable, which means I want to be able to hold it comfortable in my right hand, so I would like the camera to be comfortable to hold and balanced.

I want the camera to have a good point and shoot capacity with live view, and built in settings particularly landscape setting, and be able to use the live view when the camera is in that setting. (unless I can accomplish the same thing by saving manual adustment, that I can later use in essentially a point and shoot mode)

All things equal I would like the view finder and live view to be as close to 100% as possible, though I could live with less.

Basically most of the time I will be traveling fast, and want to stop and shoot using point and shoot with landscape and only sometimes with best shots take the time for manual controls, hence the desire for point and shoot capacity, with live view. to compose shots

(I use a hoodman loupe so I can hold the camera steady and use the lcd scrren even in bright sun.

A camera like the olympus e 510 would probably suit my needs if it were weather resistant.

But the main thing is a camera that can I can use to shoot quickly on the run with minimal time to fiddle with setting, in low light conditions, and that can withstand at least exposure to rain

I appreciate in advance your thoughts, comments and advice

I am open to creative solutions, that might not be what I originally asked for.

How many times are you planning on making this thread? Your question has already been answered. There's no perfect camera for you. Maybe instead of continuing to recreate this thread you can "bump" the old thread or ask follow up questions. I see you've found the "New Thread" button, next look for the "Post Reply" button.
