Hoping to buy a new Nikon D80 or D300 soon. OH is going to Singapore soon and is happy to forfeit an Australian warranty and hopefully get a better price. Is this a good idea? What do others think about ebay, or duty free re prices and who do you know who to trust. Live in Adelaide, South Australia and not sure what to do in regards to this.......

Trying to save pennies is usually fraught with disaster. I'd say just pay the extra and get the genuine thing with the genuine warranty - even if it means you have to save for a few weeks longer.

rhys doesnt understand the massive markup in australia so i wouldnt take his advice in this instance. do your homework first about pricing in singapore. d-d photographics is in sydney, they have the d300 for $1999 and the d80 for $895. they are a very reliable seller.

D-D can be found here:

DPR is in SA and recently bought from D-D Photographics so maybe private message him about his experiences. ssil2000 is in adelaide aswell and i think he also bought online.

other aussie members from victoria also swear by photobuff found here:

i have bought most of my lens'/ accesories from HK Suppies on ebay. reliable, fast and cheap. they can be found here:

good idea. they are different cameras to hold. i used to have a d80. loved it. the d300 is quite a bit larger and heavier if that makes a difference. there is also a steep price difference. that extra $1000 can buy you some decent glass. so you probably have to decide if you need a camera as advanced and packed with features as the d300.

while you're in the shops, check out the canon 40d, 450d and sony a700. they are all very good optons aswell.

Polomum, if you make your purchase less than 30 days prior to leaving Aus, you can claim back the GST value at the airport. This means you can play with the camera before leaving. :)
