I have a new powershot a75- every indoor picture I take in auto mode has substantial overexposure due to the flash being too high- you can't adjust this in auto mode, and you shouldn't have to. Any suggestions to correct this appreciated- or do I have a defective camera ?

Welcome to the world of flash photography!
Flash is hit-and-miss most of the time - even with the best flash computers in the world.

My old Kodak DC4800 handled the flash much easier- and you had to deliberately "pop it up". I did find that toning down the exposure to a negative level in P mode helped somewhat. I hope I made the right choice trading "up" for the A75.

If you go into full manual mode, you have 3 leves of flash.
Try and adjust it to a lower level.
