Budget * Most for the least, but willing to go $750-ish.

Size * Prefer compact P&S, but doesn't seem like I'm going to be satisfied with the results.

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
* Using 3.2 MP Olympus C740 UZ now, so anything is upgrade!:)
* What optical zoom will you need? Lots to get close to the soccer action.
* How important is “image quality” to you? 7 (in focus and correct timing are important, not going to make posters out of the pictures).

Do you care for manual controls? * I'm only a P&S guy, so manual controls will be more advanced than I am.

General Usage
* What will you generally use the camera for? Kids' sports, which are soccer and swimming (indoors). They are HS age. Also for general family stuff, holdays, get togethers, vacations, boating, etc.
* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Not, maybe 8 x 10 at the most, but doubtful even at that.
* Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes for both. Games are at night, swimming indoors. Swimming kills the AF on my current camera due to low fluorescent lighting.
* Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Yes, that is the goal.

Miscellaneous
* Are there particular brands you like or hate? Nope, I have no accessories, lenses, etc that need to be mated.:)
* Are there particular models you already have in mind? Based on research so far, I'm figuring that a DSLR with 2 lenses will be the final answer for getting the results that I desire. I'd rather have a P&S based on my skill or lack there of. But hey, maybe I'll improve.

I have been reading DCRP since researching and buying the 740UZ and find much value in the reviews...until the point where every camera says consider cameras 1, 2, & 3 instead. I'm sure they are all pretty good relative to what I am using. I always start within my budget and end up at an EOS 40D and realize that my wants and needs are not in agreement. I typically will research and find what I want, but in this case, I'm looking for some help that what I choose will meet my needs. I'm not scared of getting a generation behind the current new technology, but don't want to be the only guy with a Betamax.:D

I have appreciated the reviews on DCRP that have taken me this far. Also appreciate the candid nature of the forums I have been browsing. Any help and/or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert (as a matter of fact, I'm a P&S guy myself), but it sounds like an entry level DSLR might be a perfect fit for you. Entry level DSLR's like the Canon Rebel XTi or XSi have great auto modes, and are really good for action shots. You'd be able to get close to the action with a 55-250mm lens. As far as fast and accurate focusing goes, you can't beat a DSLR.

If that's a little out of your price range, I'd suggest a Panasonic FZ18. That'll get you as close to the action as any other camera, and the pictures will look fairly good, too.

The soccer shots, especially on bright days, will be very good with something like the FZ18. However in the swimming pool any of the ultrazooms will be hard pressed to take shots with excellent image quality.

Just found a deal on the Sony a200. Camera, Sony 18-70 mm lens, Sony 75-300 mm lens. All for $ 599 (zoom lens free). This is at my local Circuit City. Good deal or stay away? Ends Saturday. This is $ 200 cheaper than local camera store, who includes 3 yr extended warranty.

Well, I took the plunge. Went it CircuitCity for the a200 and found that the a300 kit was somehow the same price. Am now equipped with my first DSLR, a300 w/ 18-70 and 75-300 lenses for $599. I think I did pretty well as far as the deal goes and the first day of soccer pictures turned out pretty good also (2 hours after buying the camera)!

Sounds like a great deal to me. For fast moving action and a long lens a dSLR is pretty much the only way to go. I have an FZ8 for tossing around and there's just enough lag to make tracking a shot a bit tricky.
