Currently I am an owner of a S1 IS and a 35mm Rebel I got back in the 90's.
I have been wanting to to upgrade the S1 to a dSLR & figured one of the digital rebels would also allow me to exchange lenses with the 35mm.
Now, I have been contemplating the Rebel XT but wonder if I should step up to the XSi or XTi. Basically I will be taking Outdoor Nature photos but also night photos & maybe some astrophotography.
Thanks in advance.

I'd go with at least an XTi. The XT doesn't have a very good AF system, at least in my experience, and that of other folks. My (former) silver one was in for service I think 5 times before I finally sent it to corporate for a full refund. Even they admitted it was a duff unit and the refund was issued without delay. Canon addressed the XT's focus issues by putting the superior 20D/30D AF system in the XTi.

If your interest is in taking "Outdoor Nature photos but also night photos & maybe some astrophotography", you may want to consider the XSi (450D). The live-view mode for framing and focusing is really what makes the 450D stand apart from the other cameras. I have modified the 450D for daytime infrared imaging and astrophotography and posted detailed instructions and test results here:

You can also do astrophography without the modification, but if you decide to increase the camera's sensitivity, you can later modify the camera or send it to companies that will do it for you.
