Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible. Up to $350

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?
I would like a ultracompact, but might be willing to go to compact

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you? 9-10

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify) Standard is fine, but Ultrazoom would be nice.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10) 9. I know that the ultracompacts have an issue with noise.

Do you care for manual controls?Would be nice but not necessary. I have my Nikon for that.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?Snapshots, my 11 months old baby, parties and any time I don't want to lug my Nikon D40x.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Maybe an 8x10 if it is nice, but sometimes I do crop.

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes of my baby & cats, parties, family functions.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Only as fast as a baby can move, maybe my cat or at a Mets game.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate? Nope. I already have a Casio Exlim from 2003, 3mp. I like that the shutter was pretty fast, but I got tired of the horrible picture quality and bought Nikon D40X. After I bought the Casio, I stopped using all my Canon film equipment (4 bodies and various lenses).

Are there particular models you already have in mind? Panasonics...DMC-FX35, FS5 (ultras), LZ10, TZ5(compacts) and Cannon SD 1100IS

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD) IS stabilization...yes. Wide angle...nice. Underwater case...nice. I know most do not have a shutter lag, but that is important.

TIA,
Gail

For minimum shutter lag, Sony is tops. There are also some fast Canon and Panasonic models. But you have to be picky about the exact model with these, as they are hit-and-miss.
