I am getting my economic stimulus check soon, and i am looking into getting a semi decent fast lens... I found the Canon 100mm F2.0 USM, $400-ish. I would be using it for some sports, and portraits.
Is there anything this in that focal length and aperture range for around the same price, that might work better?
Thanks!

I think the 85mm f/1.8 is more popular. I'm not sure if it's better. The 135mm f/2 L is one of the best Canon lenses but I think it costs around $900.

All Canon EOS lenses will fit on an XT/XTi/XSi. Only those marked EF will fit on full frame canon cameras.

Its supposed to be a great portrait lens, although most opt for the 85 1.8 instead - the 85 is long enough for most on a crop (1.6X) sensor, plus many say that the 85 is sharper wide open with less CA (chromatic aberation).
I would choose the 85 over the 100 for a reason you might not have considered - its more popular and one of Canon's most sought-after consumer lenses; thus if you decide to unload it for something else it will sell in a flash on POTN, FM or God-forbid, Ebay.
Here's a nice comparison of the 85, 100 and the 135L....

I'd also edge more towards the 85 f1.8... it's a very nice/useful lens and (new) is approx $50 less than the 100 f2. http://www.canogacamera.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=3773
