Greetings,

I am about to purchase a Canon Powershot S5, and so my question then relates to the memory card. The specs for the camera specify that it will accept either SD or SDHC media. I find brands such as Transcend, Sandisk, and more for as little as 18-20$$ per 4gb.

I am curious as to what makes a SD different from a SDHC. Which is better?

Being a rookie photographer, I greatly enjoy having a forum such as this to ask questions!!

Thanks,

RR Bob

SD and SDHC are the same size and shape, but the SD cards are limited to 2G in size (actually 4G, but they cheat a bit to do that) while SDHC cards can go well past 32G. If you want to buy memory cards bigger then 2G go with SDHC.

Both formats have speed ratings. For SD it's regular, 60x and 150x. That corresponds to SDHC's Class 2, 4, and 6. For your S5 you won't need more then Class 4.

One other concern..I just bought a SDHC card which my computers card reader won't read. If you are going to be using a a card reader, make sure it reads SDHC, older ones may not work as expected.
