I've been using the EOS Utility for months to download pics from my camera to computer. All of a sudden it's just quit working -- it doesn't recognize that the camera is connected to the computer. I called Canon and they walked me through some things, the last being checking the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. It turns out it won't start, gives an error 1067. The Canon gal told me that if the WIA service isn't running, the EOS Utility won't work and recommended I call Microsoft. But of course, they won't talk to me because XP came pre-installed on my computer and I'm supposed to get support from my hardware vendor. In this case Dell. I spent a couple of hours with them and they didn't come up with anything other than reinstall Windows. I only want to do that as a last resort...

So... I'm coming here in hopes that someone might have had this problem and solved it or maybe some of you have a favorite forum somewhere you get Windows support you could point me to. I've spent all evening searching the web and haven't found anything so far.

I'd appreciate any help or advice you might be able to provide.

Thanks,

Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the WIA and EOS Utility?

If you ultimately cannot get it to work, there are other programs for downloading and auto-generating folders and such. A free one that comes to my mind because I have it is FastStone Image Viewer (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm). It does a helluva lot more than download files too. Getting a card reader wouldn't hurt either.

I second the card reader suggestion. Works for me much better than a download from the camera.

I Googled a few relevant things pertaining to the WIA which if you look through it may or may not be of help...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=wia+service+%22eos+utility%22&btnG=Search

http://www.google.com/search?q=wia+service+reinstall&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=wia+service+enable&btnG=Search

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=reinstall++wia&btnG=Search

If you have XP Pro you could try the following....Home version I'm not sure if you have access to this

This is from "Start" on my PC, not sure if your's may be in a different location.....

Open "Administative Tools" > "Services" > scroll down to "Windows Image Aquisition" and highlight > right click and attempt restart. Right click of "Properties" brings up screen shown below which might allow you to get WIA started.

Uninstalling and reinstalling might help as would using a registry cleaner such as winaso.

Gosh I had a similar issue with WIA a couple of years ago on my XP Pro machine. I can't recall what I did to resolve it (after a while all my Windows issues begin to blur together...) I think I did a repair install of XP - not a full install. But you need the full (or upgrade) XP disk - I don't think Dell's recovery disks would work (if you even have those).

From Canon's site....may have some ideas for repair or fix.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling the EOS Utility and WIA drivers - that didn't help. And it was the Canon support line that told me about trying to start the WIA service from the Windows Services program - that's what failed with the 1067 error.

I'll try to look through the links that Mark 48 provided this evening.

I do have a card reader, I just kind of like the way the EOS utility splits things into different directories so I've been happily using it and haven't given any thought to what else might be available. Guess it may be time to rectify that. :-)

Thanks again,

Probably not what you want to hear, but at this point I'd probably go for the full re-install....of everything (providing you have all of your software CD's).

It clears up alot of other "issues" that accumulate over time.

Hooray! After much trial and tribulation, I found the problem in a most unlikely place... my HP All-in-One printer software. There's a critical update for after installing IE7 which did the trick.

Thanks again to everyone who responded with suggestions.

Uh! Best thing is to uninstall the HP software and just keep the drivers. HP software wants to take over.
