Kanes and Wahinis: you know, we get darn few photographs from Hawaii ... and I've been considering the possibilities of why that is:

1) Everyone is so darn broke from buying their DSLR lenses and gear, Hawaii is just a fond idea. A $1000 ticket better used in the purchase of a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.
2) The images taken are after-thoughts, as the traveler is so overwhelmed by the scenic beauty, he/she just immerse themselves in it.
3) The traveler leaves the DSLR in the hotel room and go touring/surfing/swimming.
4) No one has the guts to travel with their DSLR (it's left at home and a P&S is used instead) for fear of getting it "ripped off."

How am I doing?

Hey ... got some U.S. Tropical Pacific Island (DSLR originated) shots from the recent couple years? Post 'em!

It's an "Aloha" state of mind

Well, I went to Maui for my honeymoon back in 2004, but all I had was my P&S Olympus Stylus300 :D I did come back with a few hundred shots.

I make sure to spend at least a few hours a day taking pictures in Hawaii. There are way too many photo ops to pass up.

Well, I haven't been back there since 1979 ... and there were plenty of opportunities that could have resulted in fantastic images ... unfortunately, it was all basic film back then ... and relatively few SLR cameras. Oh sure, Minolta had a couple, Honeywell/Pentax, basic Canon & Nikon ... but lenses were extremely limited and zooms ... relatively nonexistant.

Today ... man, your shots simply have no excuse at being poor, other than the photographer not doing their job. The equipment has never been more flexible or convenient to get. Film? Hah ... you have nearly unlimited shot capability with a couple 16 GB CF or SD cards. Your shot selections are just as wide-open. You've got lenses for every day of the week, out there.

I look forward to Hawaii shots ... from a DSLR ... not the toys. Don't you make me go back and get them myself.

Don if you haven't been to New Zealand you need to. As far as photography goes it is like half of the world in one country, which half, both.:D. You will be amazed, just hire a camper(little bus for 2-4 ) & give it 2 mths & your done for processing for the next 12 mths I'll give ya the tip.;)

Hmmm ... foreign travel. Now, there's a thought. With the world shaking itself apart ... getting washed under ... and detonated ... who knows how long things might last? Better get it documented ... before it all disappears. Opportunities abound everywhere, it seems.

Thanks for the tip, though ... it goes into the "under consideration" pile. In other words: looking into the wallet for answers (other considerations).
