If so, what B+W filter will work with my 18-200 VR + hood?

I've heard the slim (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/133010-REG/B_W_65016929_72_mm_Circular_Polarizer.html) filter won't work but maybe the regular (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/9759-REG/B_W_65062161_72_mm_Circular_Polarizer.html) one will?

What about lens caps? I notice that B+W supplies lens caps with the slim filters but not with the regular ones.

The problem with a lens hood is that it blocks access to the filter - which you need to rotate to achieve the desired effect.

Can you rotate the hood since its attached to the filter?

Oh - if it's a 3rd party screw-in hood then yes.

If you're having trouble with vignetting with a round polariser then might I suggest switching to the Cokin or Lee systems?

I don't know how the hood mounts, I don't have the lens yet. I don't know if it clips on or screws on.

I just want to make sure that when I get a circular polarizer I can still use the hood.

I'm not really worried about vignetting, it shouldn't be a problem. At 18-20mm it has the highest chance but it should still be minimal, and can be corrected later.

I think you would have to set the polarizer to how you like then put on the hood

Not always possible - on some lenses the front element rotates during focussing as with my Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS. On others such as my 17-85 IS Canon or my Tamron 28-75 f2.8, it doesn't. Most of my lens hoods are bayonet fit anyway.

The 18-200 is internal focusing so it won't turn the polarizer.

I notice, looking at Nikon's site that the lens hood is bayonet fitting so that means you don't have to worry about that in combination with any filters. I don't know about vignetting but as they put a filter thread then I must assume they know what they're doing and suggest that an ordinary size filter would probably work, if not then a slimline.

Thanks Rhys, that's what I wanted to know. Looks like I won't worry about it then.

One thing remains though - can the CPL be turned while the hood is on? I can't really visualize all of this without a picture showing it all assembled.

the lens hood clips on, it doesnt screw on so it is not attached to the filter at all. you have buckleys trying to adjust a slim one with the hood on. a normal CPL sometimes you can adjust but generally its too difficult and you end up with finger marks all over your filter from trying to make the adjustments. so, set your polariser first then the hood if you need to use it.

RE: slim polarisers. you cannot clip the lens cap on with these and the push on lens cap that comes with the B+W is horrible. it doesnt stay on. i would strongl;y recommend you get a regular CPL and then you can clip on the lens cap no problem.

I haven't done it, but I've heard of people cutting/modifying their hood to allow use of a CPL with it.

or you could just move everything over to pentax, which includes a little piece to remove to use your filter. I just got a cir-polorizer and these peices come in so handy!

left- my 50-200 with my new hoya polorizer,
right- my 18-55 lens hood

sorry about the pic, I've wanted to try a product shot, and this gave me a good reason to! good luck:D

Great thinking Pentax.

Pentax comes out with nifty ideas quite often. Pity they don't have such a great implementation and marketting plan.

Of the four lenses I own, I have a problem only with the Canon 70-200f2.8L. I have to make sure to adjust the polarizing filter prior to putting the hood in place (or removing the hood if I forgot the adjust the filter). I can adjust the polarizer with the hood in place on my shorter focal length lenses.
