B & W Conversions

This is a shot of some heavily pruned sweet gum trees in Golden Gate Park. I tried two different black & white conversions. Which do you like better?

I like the first one better but I think they both need more contrast.

They both kind of have a glow around the gum trees. The kind of glow you get in PP sometimes, from processing one part of an image separately from another and feathering the transition. It shows up in the B&Ws much more than in the color, but I think that increasing contrast will increase the apparent glow.

those look kinda bland in black and white, i like them with more depth and contrast. like this
