Hi All
Not sure if I’m being too pedantic as I’m new to the DSLR world (can’t believe I’ve waited so long!). I just wanted to check whether it’s normal when the lens is mounted to slip <2mm when it is twisted using light-moderate force if I’m holding the lens at the base. Other than that, the lens fits snug and doesn’t wobble or anything like that. Should I be worried?
Thanks
what does slip mean ? do you mean the barrell creeping forward ? if so that is a common issue with "super zoom" lens'. if you mean moderate movement at the mount, yes there is a tiny amount of movement, not 2mm though. as long as the electronic points always reamin in contact with the body it should be ok. ie: the cam should never fail to recognise the lens when it moves at the base. i would consider getting it checked out just in case...do you have any other lens' you can mount to see if they move ?

This has been a common complaint about the D300 - at least from what I have seen online so far, this has come up a few times already. Quality Control issue?

Thanks for the replies above.
Rooz, it is movement at the base. CPU contacts must be fine as it all works fine, even with the slight movement. Reason i picked up on it is because last week I was using a Pentax DSLR and noticed that when i mounted the lens it was very tight to twist on and there was no movement afterwards at all. Unfortunately I have no other lenses to try. If a small amount of movement is normal then I won't worry about it.
If anyone could please let me know if their lens has a slight twisting movement when mounted that would be great (regardless of camera and lens model).

Best thing to do is take it to the shop you bought it from & try some other lenses. If you can't then take it to your nearest camera shop & try some different lenses on the premise that you are looking to buy,you are really just not right then, try the different lenses on the camera & you'll have your answer. Asking on here is a bit hit & miss as your lens or camera may be the problem & you won't definitely know until other lenses are tried on said base.;)

A few people have posted about loose lens fits like you describe.
I guess your answer is that for 99.9% of people the 18-200 on the D300 is snug as a bug in a rug. No wobble, lens creep or slip.
Good camera and lens choice:D, look forward to seeing some pics when you've got it settled.

Do you mean that the lens will rotate after being mounted on the D300? (i.e. you can turn the lens clockwise and counterclockwise on the mount)?
Or do you mean that the lens will move forward and back while on the mount?
If the former, that's common with Nikon mounts (AFAIK). If the latter, that would be new news to me.

Hi all
I have been away for the weekend learning some of the features of the D300, so many of them! Now that I sorta know the various functions I can focus on taking photos!
I went to a camera shop and tried another Nikon and lens and noticed that it slipped clock/counter clockwise just like mine does... I gather there is no problem. Thanks for all your help.
No probs mate. We're here to help.
