Nikon PictureProject problems

I woudl think that this problem has been discussed before, but I cannot find the thread. I download pictures from my camera to PictureProject on my computer. Things are a bit slow, but workable. The problem is that somehone, PP puts pictures in two files and splits the image -so I have many pics in PP that have no connection to the jpeg file on my hard drive and are therefore unusable. Is there a way to restore my hard drive or merge the pictures so that they can be viewed? If the part of the file has been deleted, I presume that there is no way to get it back? Can I use system restore on my computer to restore the seemingly fractured picture files?

Sounds strange. Could it be an option that you have taken the pictures missing from your computer in raw format?

not sure about what format PP is using on my machine. I am not that savvy on software. If the picture is deleted, why does it still show up on PP but is unsuable unless reunited with the jpeg file?
