I bought a pile of photo CDs that claim to store 2000 pics each in "HQ mode". Could anyone give me a definition of HQ mode, how to use it, and whether it will have any adverse affects on my photos?

Thanks!

It's hard to say what the CD people had in mind, but HQ isn't a phrase that means anything. It's probably referring to capturing images in High Quality mode when taking pictures. But since cameras are all different they take images at different sizes there's no way to make any claims about how many images it can store.

For the most part, CDs are CDs. They all store images in the same way, with some minor differences.

There isn't a definition for HQ it's marketting speak only.

Is it a CD or a DVD it makes a big difference.
CD 600MB capacity / 2000 photos is 300kB per photo which is pretty small. You'll see jpeg compression artificacts at that file size. For example thats the size a lot of people post on this web site for their small web suitable images.

If it's a DVD at 4.7GB capacity / 2000 photos = 2.35 MB per photo which is pretty big. You'll be unlikely to see jpeg compression defects and relatively well able to edit and resave.

Thanks! The CDs are 700MB. I thought it was pretty small. How many gigabytes is that?

Is it possible for me to store photos on DVD-Rs, and if so how do I do it?

700MB = about 0.7 gigabytes. I use DVD-R's to backup my photos - As long as you have a DVD-R drive then you can just write to them the same way you do CDs. If not, you're going to need a DVD-R drive first, or to stick to CDs. :p

As already said, 700 MB is .7 GB. And that means if you fill up a 2 G card you'll need 3 CDs to store all the data.

You just write the data to the CDs. Whatever software came with your camera should be clear on how to start the session. As has also been mentioned, if you are taking a lot of photos you will probably want a DVD writer, not a CD writer. Otherwise you end up with dozens of CDs.

That is exactly what I was looking for, thanks fellas!

Look up HDV online. Puts all else to shame, though it's just a tad expensive.
