View Full Version : The moon as the EOS saw it!

The first shot was one of the moon using my new 70-300mm IS telescopic zoom lens. If you study this one, you will see that none of the features of the moon were captured (lunar seas) and the moon appeared as a uniform light source. To rule out blown highlights, I under-exposed in a later shot and got the same results!

In the second snap, I tried to capture my moonlit veranda.

And it turned out to be a sunlit one!

I don't know if you are looking for advise..but I always use spot metering and center the moon in the viewfinder for good results. Your shot is overexposed.

It is blown highlights. The camera is trying to correctly expose the very dark sky and by doing so is blowing out the highlights in the very bright moon. You can spot meter or shoot manual. The settings should be more like what you'd use in the day time.

The Rebel XT doesn't have spot metering. I used the default metering option.

What about the second shot? Why did a moonlit porch appear to be one at dusk! Look at the sky... doesn't look like night at all.

You can still use the manual controls if your camera doesn't have spot metering.

If you used a longer shutter speed (30 seconds) then the available light will be more apparent in your exposure. If I'm not mistaken, the second shot is 9 (6 SS, 1 fstop, 2 ISO) stops brighter than the first one.

The Rebel XT doesn't have spot metering.

I thought that was the same camera as the EOS 350D, in which case it does have spot metering :)

The XT was the EOS 300D w/o spot metering...I read Jeff's review and that was one of his "didn't likes"

you dont need spot metering cos you are selecting the exposure manually anyway as opposed to using cameras the light meter.

set it to manual, try f8, 1/160s and work it out from there. you cant use the light meter to adjust expsoure here so you cant use Ap or Tv. it must be manual expsoure mode.

Yeah I always start with F5.6 and 125/sec in manual mode and go from there...usually end up near what Rooz suggested. The meter never works...
55-250 Canon F4-5.6 IS This was F5.6 at 250/sec I believe

18-50 sigma This was F5.6 and 125/sec...

350D & Rebel XT (http://www.topicpoint.com/Canon_EOS_350D_Rebel_XT/index.html) definitely the same beast

If you consider a 9% partial at center "spot metering"...most photographers wouldn't...;)

Depends on the true definition of spot metering I suppose. Canon's 9% metering wouldn't be classed as spot metering as defined here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metering_mode), but nevertheless, is a very useful metering mode as described here (http://www.spotmetering.com/spcrebxt/)

I got hung up by Jeff's opening remark.."Without a doubt, the Canon Digital Rebel (aka EOS-300D)" My mistake..thanks for pointing it out
