When I bought my new toy this year I said to myself I was going to sort the Taxonomy of my pictures well that is well under way.

Since getting a new camera I decided to with 3 root folders

Canon EOS 40D
FUJI
Downloaded Pictures (this is getting quite full as searching for an E Type\ XKE and downloading pics of every car I go to see)

Then within these 3 folders I put an edited and unedited folder in each.

Now the problem I came across last night was after being away last wkd I wanted to create a small slide show the outlaws.

But.... was is the best naming convention :-

Use 1......10 when you get to 11 it goes after 1
Use A...... Z when you get to Z then BA it goes after B

What naming convention do you use to keep your slides in order

I suppose there is:-

0001 - 1000

I would be interested in your filing solutions:D

I just label my folders by date. Such as:

March 3 2008
March 11 2008
March 26 2008

That way I can usually recall within a few days what date the picture I'm looking for was taken. I can't think of anything more organized than that, personally.

I have Lightroom catalogs (and therefore main folders) based on type/genre - Weddings, Portraits, Sports, Photojournalism, & Personal. Under those are folders for year. Under the year are folders by day, labeled as YYYY-MM-DD. If it's a wedding I add the B&G last names to the folder name for quick reference. Similar naming convention for portraits as applicable.

I'm also trying to get myself into the habit of keywording within LR.

I don't sort into folders by camera. I can easily use the metadata filter to sort those out. Not to mention I'll use different cameras for the same event/shoot. Wouldn't do to have those split up.

As far as the filenames themselves, it's a simple YYYY-MM-DD-XXXX with XXXX being the sequential number.

Most cameras will download the pictures to your computer into a folder named by date of picture taken. I just let it do this...I have them all go into a folder called "Originals" then there is a folder for each date. These are the master copies and anything that I edit gets put elsewhere.

I use WinXP image download so images can be directed to certain directories and file name changed.
I created F30, D80 and FZ20 directories, only one directory for each camera. I will copy them to DVD or HDD once in a while.
For D80, I use name convention according to date starting from year, month, day in that order. This way they are always sorted by name.
e.g.
N80103_###. N8 = Nikon 2008, 01 = january, 03 = the third.
F71225_###. F7 = Fuji 2007, 12 = December, 25 = 25th
