I tried my hand at this. It's harder than I thought! I think I need some extension tubes because my 100 mm macro can't focus close enough--I think it needs to be closer to 2X life size. And it's hard to avoid catchlights in the drop.

OMG I am absolutely in love with this set. Especially the last three. I didn't even notice the flowers in the waterdrop until the last 2 pics:)

Very cool Adam. I wouldn't change a thing. Take crops if you want it closer, but that size really shows the dimensions of the refracted flower. Nice! really nice!

#5 is the winner for me. excellent colours. very nice series.
Instead of using water I wonder what would happen if you used baby oil. The thicker consistency might create larger drops. I will have to give it a try.

Water? Who said they were water? :p
I tried water, but the drops were too small (hence my comment about needing to get more magnification.) Those were done with colorless dish detergent. Tomorrow I'm gonna try glycerine. I'll post results.
Thanks for all the kind compliments.

Great shots, I really like no.5,6,7, the colours look wonderful. :)
Wow! Awesome series!
I've read up a lot on this subject before and have been thinking of trying this for long time, but its yet to materialize.
Yes, from what i can recall, Its done better with a 1:1 macro and full set of extension tubes..giving around 2x magnification.
My favorites are #2 for the vivid colors and #7 for the clarity of the flower in the drop:)

Wow Adam, awesome!!

very cool.....really like #5 and #7
I used some glycerine based hand cleaner for this. It was thick enough to stay hanging longer before finally dripping off. I just held a fake rose until I got an image and what you see is what I got.

WOW.......and WOW!!! Gorgeous colors and amazing sharpness! Simply AWESOME Adam....but then it would be a surprise if they weren't!!! :)
Keep them coming....you inspire me.
Best Regards
I agree with all the previous posts and I'll add my own "WOW"! Great job!!!

Thanks Turo, Bella, mjalex, faisal, toriaj, Dani, Spook, Rooz & Bynx!
I tried a couple with glycerine. It makes smaller drops than the dish soap, but I like the shape--it's rounder and more water-like. I'll keep experimenting...
Still trying to keep the flash from reflecting back in the drop, and I think I'd like a little more magnification.

Amazing shots, Adam. #5 and #7 are my favourites. The DOF, compostions, colours and exposure are just perfect.
By the way, interesting observation regarding the different shapes of the drops of glycerine and detergent. Two years ago, when I was still in highschool I did a project about surface tension. The different shapes of the drops is caused by different surface tensions; I guess glycerine is a lot closer to water in that respect.
For long I've been wanting to try the 'reflection in water drop' shots.... so a lazy Sunday afternoon seemed to be the perfect time to finally attempt it:)
Reverse mounted the 28mm FD (18year old, bought off ebay for $30:D) on my 400D, attached the 430EX to the newly acquired OC-E3, got myself a paper flower and a garden sprayer:p Liquid used was normal tap water.
Set up shop near the kitchen sink... and this is what I got:)

Great job, Viky! How do you mount the reversed lens?

Hmmm, what if I reverse mounted my 50 mm 1.8 onto my 100 mm macro...?

Fantastic shot there Vicky & thanks for the explanation on how you did it. I wonder if you can get one of those reversers for an Olympus mount? Turning the lens round is really intreaguing - must have a go one day.

Hmmm, what if I reverse mounted my 50 mm 1.8 onto my 100 mm macro...?
I tried this and with my 50mm f/1.4 and a reverse Olympus 24mm f/2.8 and I got some terrible vignetting (like a circle picture). I think it was because the front lens I had was a f/2.8. They also sell rings so you can mount two lens faces together. I just stick to the 24mm or the 50mm reverse depending on the magnification I want. With a reverse lens there's no focusing. The only focus plane is at the minimum focus distance. Not sure how it works with two lenses.

This should work... it would give you 2:1 magnification:)

No idea about adapter for the Olympus. I guess you should search ebay:)

This usually happens when the reverse mounted lens is slower aperture than the one mounted to the camera.
A 50mm directly reversed on the body will give around 1:1 magnification
A 28mm directly reversed on the body will give around 2:1 magnification

Was out this afternoon after another storm and took the first picture of a day lily and than noticed the large drop in the upper left. Had to zoom in on the drop and you can see the flowers around it
