I am going to be purchasing my firt DLSR, upgrading from a point and shoot for bird photography. The main question I have is can sigma and tamaron long zoom lenses be used on most brand name DSLR bodies like: Sony; Canon; Nikon etc. Thanks for any information or input on this.

Yes, Sigma and Tamron do make their lenses to be compatible with different lens mounts.

If you have a camera in mind, you may want to check their websites, as they do list which lens mounts are available for different lenses.

And just to give a quick plug - I have been using Sigma lenses with my Canon DSLR system for years and they are GREAT products. Sigma and the other 3rd party brands sometimes can give you performance of the higher end Canon or other OEM brands at a significantly reduced price.
