What's the shot of a lifetime you've failed to take?
Why did you miss it?
Why was it important?

I was down the beach the other morning for a moonset, the sun had risen and the sky was getting pretty light but I was pushing underexposure to try and get "just one more" shot.

A lady walks past and tells me there's dolphins frolicking at the end of the jetty with the moon setting behind. Lovelly moonlight on the water still, just enough diffuse light before sunrise to take a photo of them. By the time I ran out to the end of the jetty the dolphins had gone. Boy it hurt to miss that shot.

It got me thinking anyone else really missed a special shot?

Hundreds, maybe thousands. Can't worry about the ones you didn't get. Just get the ones you can. Here's one you've missed. You keep taking sunsets near that pier. How about going there in the morning, walking to the end of the pier, and taking a sunrise?

BTW: Shooting the moon in that situation is probably an HDR opportunity. You need to have at least one photo where the moon is spot metered. It's way to bright for the rest of the scene. But, I see you've already recognized that, so I'll shut up now.

I used to miss shots all the time because I didn't have a pocketable camera to keep with me. Now I have a pocketable camera to keep with me and only miss the ones the camera's too slow to grab. :D

Ooh. I remember watching Lord Lucan riding sidesaddle with Elvis, both on Shergar and wishing I had my camera with me to record this momentous event.... :p

Hey I remember that! I took a pic with my Fuji but it came out blurry.

Eagle at sunrise flying just above the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Sounds great, right?

I'm simply not fast enough...:(

speaking of dolphins... i was shooting one gathering fish just off the the shore of a local beach and i could never get the shot i wanted! i would hold the camera on him for like 5mins straight then would get tired and as soon as i drop the camera he starts darting across the top of the water and like 10 fish jump out of the water, happened like 3 times!!!! so frustrating:(

Ahhh... those dolphins. They know what we are doing and deliberately want to make human feel bad. :D Not to worry Dread Pirate.
I remember a few years back I travelled on the Mekong River in SE Asia watching some rare and endangered Mekong dolphins. They seemed to always pop up behind the camera on the other side of the boat. Once I gave up after like 30 minutes trying to get a good shot then not less than 3 of them came up and frolicked right in front of me. They only went away when I got the camera ready again.

Thanks Tim, I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. Those dolphins are out to get us:p

Would have been a lovely one JTL.
