Hi guys,

I'm looking to get myself a DSLR after not using a SLR camera for years... My previous SLR was a Penatx MZ-50 (a film camera) every camera I have had since has sadly been a compact.

Long story short... I'm torn between the big name, good lens selection, lower price, and more potential to upgrade the body and keep my lenses in the future of the Canon EOS 400D, or the built in optical stabilization, larger LCD, ability to reuse the lens from my MZ-50, and weather/dust proofing of the Pentax K200D. I think at this stage I am leaning more towards the Pentax as I think the image stabilization will come in very handy, and I doubt I will be upgrading my camera anytime soon anyway, so that aspect of the Canon is not a big issue.

I will mostly be using the camera for family/travel photos, and maybe a bit of mucking around with photography as a hobby.

To further complicate things, I am not sure if I should get one "do it all" lens, ie a 18-200mm one, or should I put up with the annoyance of carrying around multiple lenses and go for a 2 lens bundle? I am leaning more towards the idea of a single 18-200mm lens for the versatility of it, as well as not having to carry around a 2nd lens at times when it would not be convenient to do so.

Final spanner in the works... I really want to get a fast portrait lens for taking photos of people and specifically my child (when it is born). I have seen a good 50mm f1.4 lens on sale for a decent price, but I was wondering if 50mm wont restrict me too much? Am I better off getting something like a 30mm f1.8?

Thank you for all those who respond!
