Hi all,

I am looking for a camera where the cost is not going to be a problem.

This is going to sound really weird but my main requirement is slimness. Yes good picture and video quality would be great but they don’t have to be the best. I can always use Photoshop to sort a few things out.

Regarding the slimness, something less than 20mm in depth is what I am after. I have not done my research into this well but the only cameras I can find that fit this are two Canons - IXUS 70 (SD1000) + IXUS 75 (SD750) and Casio’s Exilim range.

I can dismiss the Canon SD1000 as if I was to choose one of those Canons, I’d sway towards the SD750 purely because of the larger LCD.

I am not too fused about zoom, I believe 3x optical zoom is the norm for a compact digital camera. Manual controls are not essential, just a bonus.

I won’t be using the camera for sports/action or anything like that, just general friends, family and holiday snaps. Indoor shots will be taken but not in low light. Video will be used often.

From all the reviews I’ve read, both the Canons mentioned are recommended for my purpose. I’m sure there are one or two others you kind people can throw at me as recommendations?

Also are there any upcoming slim compacts that you are aware of as I don’t mind waiting a little?

Your feedback would be high appreciated.

Thanks,

For extreme slim cases also try the internal lens designs like the Nikon S51. Over 20mm thick, but still hardly husky, are the Nikon S520, Olympus 790SW, and Sony DSC-W80. The Canon SD750 does set the bar though.

Hi, thanks for your reply and recommendations Kelly.

Regarding the Canon SD750, would you (or anyone else) say that it would be a solid purchase? I've seen mixed reviews, though the majority are positive.

Thanks,

My idea of a solid choice anyways. Both Nikon and Olympus have new slimline models that may rival the Canon. However these are too new for any tests to be online yet. So they may turn out to be better, or may not. At least the Nikon looks to be a sensible design (Coolpix S210, 18mm thick).

Panasonic has a new line of slim cameras, the FS series, which are very much like its excellent FX series. The FS cameras have the new Venus IV processor and, from what I've seen so far, they produce very good, low noise images in low light.

Thanks for the replies :)

Kelly, I like the Nikon S210 a lot (in black) and only 18mm in depth with a good design! But like you said, I'm going to wait for a few reviews to pop-up on the web to see what it's really like.

Andy, I was checking out the Panasonic FS series and stumbled on the FX35 - It can shoot HD 720p videos. Now that's something I really like, I believe its 22mm thick, its worth considering even if it does cost more. Like the Nikon, I will wait to see what reviews say.

Oh, does anyone know of other compacts that offer HD recording capabilities?

The Nikon S210 is very similar to the S200, which most reviewers said was an OK camera.

Go out to a 22mm depth and that adds the new Canon SD1100, Nikon S51, and Nikon S510.
