Manual exposure Z712IS?

I've had my 712 for over a month, have taken great pix, but nowhere in the user manual or online can I find step by step how to USE the manual exposure feature after accessing it. The bottom of my screen always reads F5 at 1/125 when set at ISO64. I move the blue arrow all over the place but nothing happens. Help:confused:

When you have moved the thumbwheel and positioned the on-screen cursor over shutter speed, aperture, ISO, +/- compensation, did you push the thumbwheel to select the setting and then turn the thumbwheel to change the value?
