I'd say the D40x is a much better camera compared with the Alpha 100, especially when considering ISO image quality. But is the D40x your only option?

That would depend on how many Sony (or Minolta) lenses you currently have. You might want to wait until a reivew (or two) of the A200 comes out. It should (I would hope) have better image quality at ISO 800 and up.
The D40x is a nice enough body, but you may want to look at some other options as well, depending on your needs and (most importantly) your price range.

If you are thinking about switching systems you would also want to at least give the Canon offerings a glance as well as what Nikon has to offer. You cannot go wrong with either.
I would also agree with WestCoast - how much money have you already invested in your Sony system. I would be hard pressed to switch at this point in the game myself. I have simply collected a plethora of Canon-based equipment and accessories.
