Im heading off to travel around the world for a year or more, was wanting a practical compact digital camera suitable for all kinds of pictures. Was hoping that someone might be able to help me get started into what direction i should look or exmples of cameras to compare? Thanks

Start with the Panasonic FZ3 or FZ20. They have been designed to handle just about any situation in personal travel photography snaps.
For a small pocket cam the SD300 from Canon might do well.
If you want to do the amature photo journalist thing, then the Nikon D70 or Canon Digital Rebel would suffice.
For the pro photo journalist thing a Canon 20D would look and perform the part.
Bon Voyage. :D

For a trip of that magnitude, I'd think you want an all purpose camera that would include a large zoom and manual modes. I'd also try an avoid things like flip out LCD which, while very useful, might break on such a journey. The Panosonics that George mentioned are very good, the Canon S1 as well.
If you do go the pocket camera route, I like my Canon SD300 very much, but I might go with a weatherproof model like the Olympus 410 for this type of trip.
You should also consider the way you are going to store all the images you collect. You'll need either a PC or digital wallet to download that much data, or plan on checking in to Internet Cafes with a CD burner and burning your pictures onto a CD.
