Hello! I sold my D50 and am retiring my two D1s and will probably sell those too. I got a D40 as an "inbetween" and "backup" camera before I get a D300 later this year.

I just got the D40 out of the box and I can't set the autofocus at all. I am completely stumped. I know how to do it - I go on the menu and settings and all that but when I click to change it, it says "This option is not available with current settings" - I have no idea what these "current settings" are but I haven't messed around with anything....just charged up the battery and attached one of my lenses.

Anyone have any idea whats going on? Thanks!

You probably have it in "Auto" mode. Try Aperture or Shutter priority.

I've tried it on all the modes - none of the modes allow me to use autofocus at all.

Are the Auto focus switches on the body and the lens turned on?
What lens are you using? If the lens doesn't have an inbuilt focus motor it won't focus on a D40.
