Adorama seems to have plenty, and I could save $150+ going this route. If it is a true Canon refurb, and not just a used lens, seems like a fair deal. Just wondering if I should avoid at all costs...

I think most will say avoid, but I myself would have no problem buying a factory refurbished lens. I have purchased most of my lenses used and haven't had a problem with any of them. A refurb would be one step above this because it would come with a Canon warranty(I think it's 90 days). You should be able to flush out any trouble with a lens in 90 days. I just bought a refurbished 5D from Adorama, the body is in like new condition and everything looks to be working as it should.

I bought a factory refurbished 100mm Macro. It looked brand-new and works perfectly.

I've had mixed results. Most have been fine, but one had a serious AF problem.

Hasn't stopped me from doing it again, but it feels like a lottery sometimes.

I think your likely to get a good lens most of the time. The only reason I don't buy refurbished is that these lenses are more difficult to resell. I would prefer to buy used on POTN or FM.
