Aside from the obvious, protecting the lens glass, are they primarily for outdoor shots where the sun might muck things up? It's a pain to put my camera in my case with one on, and I'm thinking of removing it while indoors. Just wondering I guess, as stray light can come from anywhere I guess...
...one last comment, I can see why a real Canon hood costs $25+. They aren't really just a hunk of cheap plastic from what I see. They are a good grade plastic, and have a perfect lining of felt stuff inside, not to mention the screen printing on them. I don't know, it seems like a well built accessory to me.

i put mine on backwards when i put the lens in the bag. its makes the lens a little thicker but takes up less space. plus you can still shoot with it on there like that just incase you need it quickly......

I do the same as killing switch, put the hood on backwards
And I use hoods indoors and out just in case I happen to bump the end of my lens into something
But maybe you shouldn't listen to me, people tell me all the time i'm over protective of my glass...
:p
^^ same here .. i always put hood on .. guess im paranoid ill bump into something or someone.
