I have the XTi (400D), and I am still really trying her out. I am currently using the Canon EF 50/1.8. I accidentally rotated the dioptric adjustment knob and dont know how to get it back. Right now, when I set it so that the image is very clear in the viewfinder, the actual picture (in the LCD screen) is a MESS.
How do I calibrate the view finder so that I can both compose and take sharp pictures?

I'm really surprised that there was such a huge difference between the two images because I am nearsighted, not far-sighted, so I see perfectly close up (at least for reading & what not), and even my prescription for my glasses is very slight (and I don't shoot with my glasses on).

I seriously need help if I want to take any decent pics!! I really appreciate any help!!

The diopter has nothing to do with the focus. Make sure the auto focus on the lens is on, focus on something, and set it from there.

The diopter should be adjusted to get the sharpest view of the exposure information in the viewfinder, not the subject.

Thanks, that did help!
