I heard a story the other day about a Canadian walking into a store in Australia and asking if they sold "fanny packs". Would you know what she was talking about? Apparently "fanny" has a different meaning down under.... I thought it was hilarious!

Wow, I can only imagine the strange looks you'd get if you walked into a store and asked for a fanny pack in... well pretty much anywhere but the US (and even here, I'd question peoples' fashion judgment). That's a hilarious thought.

I had to google it to find out what that meant in Aussieland.... I had no idea.
I ride Mtn Bikes, and we use the term fanny pack all the time!

Ya, the point was the sales person thought that the woman was asking for a feminine hygiene product. I was curious to know if the average aussie would know the northamerican use for the term. Little things like that amuse me sorry.
fanny is a vagina in AustraliaSo, I guess in Oz, if you gave someone a "little pat on the fanny"...you could get some unexpected results...:D

Fanny pack is definitely a North American term, but I think it's even more American. Most Canadians (the ones I know, including myself) would use the term hip sac. I work with a few Americans and they use the term fanny pack more than the Canadians at my work do.

Classy!
When I first moved here from Canada, you should have seen the looks when I went to the shop asking for Wieners and Baloney

Yes I guess a fanny-pack in Australia would be known as a Harem in other parts of the World :p :D
I seem to recall my first exposure to the American term of Fanny was Colonel Potter on M.A.S.H.
As for what you think a fanny pack is, I have no idea

Hey Nickcananda, I was directed your way from the Nikon forum. This has absolutely nothing to do with fanny packs (although that is kinda funny to know), but I was looking into a sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for my D80 for concert photography. And VTEC EATR over in the nikon world said that you used a 35mm f/1.4 for concert shots and have had awesome results, and said I should check out some of your shots. Do you have them all posted anywhere that I could take a look?? Thanks.

Hey! the 24-70mm is good but 2.8 sounds like it would be too slow for a lot of situations even at high ISO.
You can check out some of my shots here (brownrigg.exposuremanager.com) check out the portfolio folder for a general look at the kind of shots I like and take.
A great new resource for concert photographers is musicphotographers.net
They have forums and articles and blogs and lots of other great information on everything concert photography related.
Have a look at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and the Nikon 85mm 1.8. Those are the only two focal lengths I use and I think it works okay for me.

That's funny, here in Trinidad, the word "hip" refers to a person that has hemorrhoids that bleed profusely. The sac, well that is like a diaper that prevents leakage...I'm sure you get the point!
So... I wont go gallivanting around Australia asking for fanny packs, and I wouldn't recommend wandering around the islands here asking for a hip sac.... unless you really need one.

When I bought mine the sales clerks called it a fanny pack, too. I used that term until some of my more refined friends suggested that it ought to be properly referred to as a "lumbar support pack". :)
I also remember a friend of mine asking the girl next to him what all these "PMS" greeting cards are about ... :D
