A lot depends on what sort of image quality you expect from a printer.
We're currently using a Canon Pixma MP180 for our colour printing (up to A4) but then we're not expecting "gallery quality" prints. Our 6" x 4"s are equally as good as store printed. Well, we think so anyway LOL.
The MP180 produces a nice evenly graduated print, with good skin tones, and without any obvious evidence of banding, and if we use a top quality Canon paper we couldn't be more happy. We've found it pays to buy a premium priced Canon paper rather than the el-cheapo stuff — the extra dollars pay off for sure.
Our only concern is that— even using high yield Canon cartridges — we're spending more than we'd like to on replacement cartridges.
The MP180 also has front ports for reading cards directly.
Hope this helps.
Cheers :)

The Canon Pixma line is impressive. I have the IP 5000 (3 yrs old) and the image quality is quite good. I'm sure it's replacement should be better (4500) It also prints on cd's and dvd's. Right now it's about $120 and less than $100 when on sale.

Newegg has it for $95. If that's too much, you can look at the IP3500, but I would try to get to a store to compare quality.

Canon cartridges (for MP 180) are a bit on the expensive side in Australia at $84 per set:
CL 51 colour at $44-00 AUD
PG 50 black at $39-49 AUD
Maybe I should Amazon them from the USA?
Cheers :)

One gripe - Why are Canon to tight to put a USB lead in the box there only a couple of £.
