I have a Manfrotto 484rc2 quick release ballhead (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=272757&is=REG) for my tripod (way out of my league, really.. but it was a gift...)
Unfortunately the quick release plate.. (the little bit on top that attaches to the camera) somehow disappeared, and I need to find a replacement for it. Generally it seems they aren't sold independently of the head, which is about 80 bucks.. I want to know if there's somewhere I can get one separately; it doesn't have to be brand name per se, I just need to be totally sure ti will fit on the head...
thanks!

You can get these in some of the larger Wolf/Ritz camera stores (I am guessing you are in the USA as you don't tell us where). Also, B & H photo carries them I have bought several for my 486rc2 head. I am pretty certain that in Manfrotto land the RC2 portion defines the quick release model and the 48x is the ball head model, so all RC2's are the same.

I think this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/179175-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3157N_RC2_Quick_Release_Plate.html ) is it. You'll need to double check though.

I take it you didn't scroll down. Under the accessories tab, which is displayed by default:
