Just picked up one of these lenses at my local Best Buy (yes, I was surprised to see such a nice lens at BB), get home, and realize there is no lens hood that I can find. The bag is there, no hood. I don't even see where one would go.

So, anyone have one of these or one like it and can tell me where the hood was? Was it mounted backwards, in the pouch, etc.?

Ticks me off really, now I have to go all the way back, only for them to go "uh, we don't know where it is". I'll have to return it and buy it somewhere else I suppose.

One comment on quality - I compared it to the kit 28-135 lens. Both look very good to me, but the L lens really had a different color tone to it. Everything looks brighter. My fake wood floor for example looks much more real. Not sure if it's all good though - I took a picture of a brochure, and a maroon area on the cover looks much less maroon and more red on the L lens than the non-L. I find that odd, that the color cast is that different.

I can certainly see why people moan about the build quality of EF-S lenses after having a L series. Those are very, very solid feeling.

Over the course of my photographic endeavors, I've purchased 3 brand new Canon Ls and one brand new Sigma EX. I don't remember where they put it but not once did I have trouble finding the hoods.

The hood of the 17 40 L is designed for full frame & is pretty much useless on a crop camera, I nver bother with mine

I agree that the color contrast is indeed higher with the 17 40 but personally I like it, when i dont I fix it in PP

At the very least, it can be used for protection against certain bumps & thumps. Then again, I don't baby my lenses. I use them. It's not unusual for the end of it to smack a doorway or chair back or something while hanging off my shoulder. Since the hood has some flex to it, all it does is scuff it & bounce right back off.

I've never purchased a Canon lens that came with a lens hood in recent memory. I'm not saying that the 17-40 was or wasn't supposed to come with one, Canon doesn't list what supposed to be in the box on their site. It does take an EW-83E lens hood, which is the same hood that a 10-22 uses. It's a big sucker, but does protect the lens AND reduce flare quite a bit.

Ls come with hoods. Non-Ls do not, with rare exception.

I seem to remember that the lens hood was "parked" in reverse on the lens itself when the guy in from of me wanted to have a look at a 70-200 f4 L.

What would be your opinion on canon lens hoods vs. 3rd party ones (from JJC or Marumi i.e.) btw? Are they the same quality as Canon's (they are about 1/2 the price after all)?

SynterX,

From what I recall of the L lenses I've bought, the lens was factory wrapped in plastic and had foam blocks on each end. The hood was wrapped in plastic and not mounted as I recall, but on the end of the lens reversed. Is it wedged in the foam packing block, presuming it had foam?
The bag was scrunched up at one end of the box in plastic wrap.

Did you possibly have it out on the store counter looking at it and the hood got set aside. Might be worth a call to the store to see if it's there.

took it back today. The box wasn't that big to have the hood no reverse mounted I don't think. They had no more, offered no discount so I just returned it outright. Once I got it home and did some googling on it, I realized I could get it from canoga or bh for over 200 bus less. I will reorder online I guess.

Ok, but using the original hood on the 17-40 combined with your 40D makes it of little optical use (only protection). I don't own the lens nor the camera, but I was told on another forum (eosdigital of gathering.tweakers I guess) that the hood of the 24L f/1.4 USM (Type: EW-83D II) is recommend by Canon to use on the 17-40 when combined with a crop-camera.
