View Full Version : Lenses - there's no pleasing some people!

I finally picked up a lens to bridge across the range of my other two.:)
They are all Sigma. My 17 - 70 is a truly nice lens - nice and sharp - and reasonably bright starting from f2.8.
I also had the 70 - 300APO which I am very pleased with all in all.
The overlap lens was hard to hunt down as they seem to all be discontinued - so I got lucky with a Mint 2nd hand one. (Sigma 28-200mm f3.5-5.6)
It's not bad at all - so I tried to do some comparisons with the 17 - 70 with both at 70mm and then both at 50mm.(I should maybe also do the same against the 70 - 300 somwetime...)
First off I can't believe how quickly the light can change when you try to do something like this!!! - I set up on a tripod so that both images would be as near the same as possible - but the sun and the clouds were against me. Constantly changing whilst I rapidly swapped lenses.
Bottom line is the 28 - 200 is quite sharp - but overall less sharp than the 17 - 70. But there is no way to please me!! It woud be nice if it were as sharp as the 17-70 (extreemly unlikely!!) but if it were - I would be unhappy about the 17-70!! :D
Meanwhile - has anyone else tried comparing their lenses - I couldn't believe how hard it was to succesfully do!

I haven't done anything scientific, but I've noticed that when I switch to my 50mm 1.8, the color changes  (it doesn't when I switch between my kit and Sigma.)

Enjoy your new stuff!
