Is the EEEPC worth bothering with when you have a normal sized laptop?

I looked at it and thought it's a handy size to toss in a camera backpack. It's also handy because it's got a solid-state hard drive so it doesn't matter if it gets bumped and banged.

I have a Hyperdrive HD80 that would work well with that. The only problem is that as the thing uses Linux I might not be able to find decent RAW editing software for my XT and 30D files.

Idly I was thinking of it because I am looking at a couple of long flights in the near future.

I do all my RAW editing on Linux, with UFraw / The GIMP and LightZone. Both support the 30D and XT.

UFraw (http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/)
The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/)
LightZone (http://www.lightcrafts.com/index.html)

I believe ther are other RAW converters / editors for Linux, including DCraw.

Won't that drive up the cost though?

Ya it will, of coarse. You can get them with dif sized HD and some with or without web cams. I've been looking into one for my gerlfriend, here in Taiwan anyway, the very basic 2gb w/ linux sells for about 312USD where as the 8 GB w/ windows is about 450USD. SO ya the price is higher so you just have to decide if it's worth it or not.

Rhys,

You have noticed, I hope, that the screen resolution on that Eee PC is 640x480. Yup. VGA. I haven't seen a VGA screen in years. Of course, I haven't actually seen a D300 yet, but that's only 3". A lot of current software requires more than VGA. You might want to check that out before throwing your money at this.

Apparently, there will be a version that you can install windows on, but then the max resolution becomes 800x480, or 800x600 with a shifting screen. Yes, you have to scroll the screen to see the bottom. Thanks, but no.

I was half considering one as something to play with on a long flight. It looked as if it was something that had potential but quite honestly what puts me right off it is the price. It's $350 too high for the use I'd give it.

I'd love a small laptop but as Apple stopped making their 12" iBook, it looks like my Presario V2570NR is probably going to be my best bet for the moment although if 64GB SSHDs drop in price enough to be considered then I'm definitely changing my laptop hard drive out.
