And we all thought that Sigma 200-500/2.8 was a beast.

Sorry for the repost.

That thing is so out of my league at that price.

I think the new 800/5.6 coupled with the 1.4x II TC will do an admirable job. :D

That's precisely why this one is on the market, don't you think? How many 800mm can you buy for $100,000?

Hell, that's about the cost of the entire collection, isn't it?

To be blunt, you could buy a telescope with a camera adaptor for a ton less.

How does one stop-down with a telescope Rhys?

Also, what is the MFD of your typical telescope? A mile or three?

As for AF?

I would hate to see the power consumption of a 1200mm AF lens! Especially if it was run off the camera battery!

All modern AF super-teles are rear-focusing Rhys.

I think you'll find the focusing elements in the 1200/5.6 are comparable to those found in the 600/4 IS.

Or you go for the uber-telephoto zoom lens: Nikon 1200-1700 F/5.6-8

But I don't know of any places that currently have one for sale.

This blows my mind:

From midtown Manhattan we were able to read the street signs on the corner of JFK Boulevard East and 43rd St. in Weehawkin New Jersey when viewing image files at pixel resolution.

And this is just silly:

For what it's worth, if you couple this lens to a Rebel XTi or EOS 40D you end up with the 35mm-equivalent of 1920/5.6, a 2688/8 with a 1.4x extender, and a 3840/11 with a 2x extender.

...on a Canon 1-series body! :D

It would be fully manual, but... at least you have the "flexibility" of a zoom lens. :)

Oh wow...

Look at that...

That is just beautiful...
Absolutely stunningly gorgeous...

...The canon 1 series I mean... not that ugly thing attached to it.

:P

Hahaha, I would not have noticed it was a Canon 1D series attached if it were not for your commentary.

Nice catch!

VTEC, that monster lens is a freakin' dinosoar in size and practical application.
As CDubb stated, canon has thankfully released cheaper, smaller, and more readily available [hopefully] glass.

Either way, it's nice to see it again.

I'd be real careful with hugging this baby around ... by its sheer length and rough shape, in this day and age ... I suggest that it could be a little to easily confused with a portable anti-aircraft or anti-tank missile launcher.

For example:

33021
"Bird's away!"

33022
"Oh shucky-darns ... there's a bird in the way!"

Weird, huh? Wait ... no officer ... please put that gun away. OMG! "Incoming!"

Me neither, but I was wondering why a Nikon was sporting a Canon neckstrap ...
