Ok, I'm a total noob when it comes to DSLR. I'm putting together my ultimate wishlist/shopping list and was wondering. How do I know which filter size I'll need for particular lenses? Is there a formula for determining filter size? I swear I've researched and read so much that my brain is oozing from my ears!!

I'm so excited. Should be ordering everything on Friday. Just fine tuning my list of 'must haves'.

Each lens will have its filter size stated. Often it will be 67mm, 77mm, 62mm, 58mm or something similar.

Before you go buying things or not buying things, cheap or expensive, that people thought you needed 20 years ago and still need now, I would read this...

Keep in mind that some filters, like CP filters, are expensive, so I have only one CP (77mm). Getting multiple CP's of varying filter sizes can be pricey so I use step up rings which allows me to use my 77mm CP on lenses with smaller filter sizes.

That's possible but stops you from using lens hoods.

Usually having the hood on at the same time as a CPL is a pain because it's difficult to rotate the filter.

Plus, I rarely use a hood with my 60mm macro or 50mm 1.4.
