View Full Version : 32GB CF - Will it work?
I was wondering if anybody out there had blown $135 on NewEgg's 32GB A-Data CF cards.
Do you know whether such a large card would likely work in my 5 year old CF reader and my XT/30D?

I would imagine it's pretty slow... can you give me a link to it? Just cuz i'm curious to check it out for myself too ;)

It would probably only be a 16GB in the XT. I've read that's the maximum capacity of the latest firmware. I haven't looked for the 30D, you might try googling just to see if it comes up with anything.

Compact flash has the controller built into the card. It's one of the SIGNIFICANT advantages to CF. Whatever the capacity of the card, it will work, because the card manages it's own memory. It would be rather silly to make a 32GB card with a 16GB controller.
There is one limitation. If your device uses FAT instead of FAT-32 as it's file system, then it will be limited to 2GB. If you are already using 4GB cards, then you should be able to use anything up to the current limiting capacity of 137MB, though, AFAIK, the largest card made is 64MB. This is a device limitation. The card can address all the memory it contains.

You mean 137GB and 64GB?

I mean that the format limiting size is 137GB, but the largest card I am aware of currently available is 64GB.

Yes. The size limitation is a FAT 32 problem (as well as FAT being a lousy file control system). I think FAT 32 will be with us for some years yet though. I cannot imagine any digital cameras going over to NTFS or ETH1 for quite some time.
The only problem I find with 4GB cards is that they take a lot longer to initialise on my Nikon 3100. The delay from power-up to ready for the first shot is a lot longer.
