I have successfully downloaded 3 sessions of pictures and video clips. Today I filled my 256MB memory card and cannot download.
Previously I simply connected, turned the camera on, and the download program popped up.
Now nothing happens.
If I start up the Canon program manually, turn on the camera, and click the acquire button I get a message that the camera cannot be found.
If I connect the camera, turn it on, and try to start the ptogram manually the program hangs up, and I have to force a reboot.
Is there something about a filled memory card that is a problem?

#1. Install software CD.
#2. Plug in cord that came with camera into computer
#3. Turn on camera to view mode
your comp should recongize the new driver (digicam) and it will do a few things you will see in the bottom right (windows xp). You should restart then start comp back up and there should be in MY COMPUTER a drive that says SD200.
Im not using technical terms because I dont know all the right words but i hope this makes sence.

Matt, he's successfully downloaded three sets of images already. The problem, as I read it, is that with a memory card completely full the computer is not recognizing the camera.
Check to make sure the cables are seated correctly. Then power cycle your computer if that doesn't work. Other than that I have no suggestions besides deleting one image to see if that helps.

First, have you tried a different memory card? You should always have an extra anyway. If so and it still doesn't respond on to plan B:
Check the computer driver: Go into "My Computer open the "control panel", open "system", and click on "hardware" and then "Device Manager" to see if one of the Human Interface drivers or USB ports has an exclamation point next to it. If so you need to reinstall the driver.
If everything there is good then on to plan C:
Instead of deleting a picture, spend $20 for a USB2.0HS card reader. You should be using this method to download anyway.
If you have a Fry's Electronics around they probably have several USB2.0HS multi-card readers, for less than $20. Otherwise you are probably at the mercy of Radio Shack, Circuit City, or Best Buy, and that reader will set you back about $30 to $40, unless there is one on sale. You might want to check with Wolf/Ritz camera as well.
If that doesn't work then I'm out of plans...
If it's a malfunctioning camera interface, (camera to computer) then the card reader will come in handy anyway.
let us know what happens.

Yes, it worked previously.
Also followed advice of Canon web site and put in a fresh battery and disconnected other USB devices (despite that they were not a problem previously). Also put the 16Mb card in. Still did not work.
Bought an SD card reader. Connected it to the same USB port and it worked immediately. Successfully downloaded from the 256Mb card. So the card is not the problem.
I strongly suspect the camera has a communication failure unless someone knows of a secret cure (some menu item I don't know about).
I have sent an email to Canon and gotten a first reply for more info. They are quite responsive but I like this forum for its access to more experienced heads.

Ok, so now we know it's a 99% chance that the camera isn't communicating with the host so:
We'll try the 24 hour, battery removed, reset. This is kind of a last user resort. Sometimes it works and sometimes it dunt.
Pull the battery out for 24 hours. You will know the reset worked if the date and time are reset when you turn it on. Don't fudge on this one as sometimes it actually takes 24 hours for the backup supercap, or battery, to discharge.
If that doesn't work then either you live with it and use the card reader, or send it in for repair. I would vote for the former.

I have had the same problem with my IXUS 500, both before and after updating to the latest version of Zoombrowser (Ver 5.0 I think). It worked when I first got the camera, but alas, no more!!!
I can download the images manually via the ol' XP route, but would like to use ZB so I don't have to manually flip portrait images...
Anybody else having these problems?
Thanx,
Dunc

Canon suggested I try the fast USB connection on the back of my computer. Tried it. Still did not communicate. WINXP saw something, but said there was a problem. ZB could not find the camera. (The front connections on my desktop system are USB1.1).
Then I tried my portable computer on which I had previously installed the software and successfully downloaded pictures (a HP Pavillion, WIN98 system).
IT WORKED!!!
So now the question is, why does it work on the portable but not the WINXP(SP2) desktop system?
As previously noted I will probably simply use the card reader (now connected to the rear USB2 port), but this quirk sort of bugs me and may be an issue for other owners.

Info from Canon (below) indicates this is a known problem, i.e., a conflict with my Lexmark X83 printer/scanner. Since I have to chose between them I'll keep my printer and use my new card reader. The important point is that there is nothing wrong with the camera. What is still a puzzle is why the camera worked ok for 3 downloads before the operating system barfed.
Solution from Canon:
A code 38 is a known issue with Windows XP when two USB imaging devices,
such as a camera and scanner, are sharing the USBSCAN.SYS file at the
same time. For more information on this error, please visit http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q324756
.
To resolve this issue:
1. Unplug other USB devices (except your mouse, modem or keyboard). In
your case, specifically, your Lexmark printer/scanner.
2. Restart your computer.
3. With your camera powered on in the playback mode and connected to
one of your rear USB ports, go back into Device Manager, right-click on
the camera listing, then left-click on Uninstall.
4. Confirm the uninstall by clicking OK.
5. Close out of Device Manager.
6. Turn off your camera, then turn it on again.
7. Windows should find new hardware, and install your camera correctly
at this point.
