Ok, this might seem stupid, but is there a way of triggering the SB600 without making the onboard flash (on the D80) actually flash?
The reason I ask is that the onboard flash will always leave a dark area in the frame because of the lens or lens hood.

Thought the D80 has built in commander mode,
sure someone with a D80 will chime in soon.

Not using CLS there isn't. If you want to use a Pocketwizard, or Ebay Cactus Infinity popper, that would be your alternative. Additionally, in the CLS menu, you can actually turn off the on board flash (switch from TTL to --). It'll still fire to trigger the sb600, but won't add to the exposure.
I gotta ask, what lens are you using that the hood is that big? Also, what shutter speed are you firing at. Just curious.

I have just bought it so am just experimenting.
My previous experience of using the onboard flash is that it leaves a shadow in the picture.
I have just found the way to switch of the flash (onboard) and trigger only!
