View Full Version : Tamron lens for D40?
Can someone give me some input on whether this Tamron lens will work on the D40 (auto focusing) and what you think of this lens? I am just checking on my different lens options. I found a D40 body only for sale (by owner) and am thinking about getting it versus one with a kit. Thanks.

It will not AF on the D40.
You are better off getting a Sigma 18-200mm DC OS HSM or Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens, both of which have image stabilization and AF on the D40.
they have announced that the 28-300 VC lens will come with an IF motor for the d40. not sure about the 18-250mm though. tamron are going to be releasing quite a few IF lens' for d40 series compatibility. i believe their new 70-200 f2.8 is also d40 compatible.

The 18-250 has AF for the D40 http://www.dpreview.com/news/0712/07120402tamron18250.asp
ahhh...there ya go. i wasn;t sure but looks like its the 18-250 aswell. good news. important info for the OP though is to make sure you get the RIGHT verion of the 18-250, cos there will be some nikon mounts of this lens which were made prior to the IF motor.

Still, this lens is not a Tamron VC (image stabilized) lens, correct?
correct. only the 28-300 is VC. which dissproves 2 myths.
myth #1: lens selection for d40's is crippling. manufacturers are jumping on board thr IF motor to make lens' compatible which shows the support they have for the d40 series and probably indicated that no IF motor is in nikon's future at least for consumer grade dslr's.
myth #2: in-lens IS is old hat and will be repalced by in-body. a load of codswallop with both sigma and tamron introducing their own in-lens stability. and both canon and nikon increasing their range of stability assisted lens'.
Thanks everyone. So help me in summary. Are you saying that the AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens will work with the D40 and will have AF, but will not have image stabilization?
If you were me and had the option of getting a body-only D40 and buying a separate lens, would you do this and if so, which lens would you get, if your budget was limited to under $300-400 for the lens?

I don't know much about the Sigma and Tamron lenses, but the Nikkor 55-200 mm AF-S VR and the Nikkor 70-300 mm AF-S VR (both autofocus with the D40 and have image stabilization) are both very good. They're selling for $200 and $400-450, respectively, right now.

Do either of these have a macro feature, or would that require a separate (and more expensive) lens? Also, would I be missing out on much by not having a lens at 18-55mm?
if you want a cheap macro feature buy an extension tube or a set of them so you can put it onto any lens to give you some macro capability. you will definately need the 18-55 range aswell.
