View Full Version : Strange Noise On A720 Vid Playback?

My partner's been happily using her new A720 IS for stills without any problems.

Over the last couple of days she's been trialling its video mode, both indoors and outdoors. But... in all scenes, regardless of total quiet or traffic sounds or whatever, the camera records (in the background) what I can best describe as a rythmic shchloop, schloop, schloop, schloop sound at the rate of roughly 3 cycles per second. It's not loud enough to overwhelm the intended sounds, but it's very annoying when you become aware of it ('cos you can't NOT hear it lol).

Is this typical of the A720 or a problem with her specific camera? Or are we simply expecting too much from what amounts to a pretty primitive audio recording/playback system — as in most compacts in fact.

Cheers :)

That?s typical of the 700 series. If you try to zoom you?ll hear that as well. The sound you hear is of you manipulating the zoom control. The camera doesn?t have a directional mic so it picks up all noise from everywhere, including inside the camera.

This strange noise occurs whether she's zooming or not — in fact the zoom motor noise is actually hard to discern above most normal ambient noise anyway. It also happens on the tripod , which precludes any hand contact noises. Thanks for the suggestion about this noise with the Canon 700 series.

I'm now wondering if any other Canon 700 series users have had this noise issue?

Cheers :)

Since you can't zoom while shooting video with this camera, I doubt that is it. Digital zoom won't cause any noise since nothing physical is moving. It may be just an artifact of the mic.

Graystar is right-I wonder if the noise is the image stabilisation working inside the body, you could try turning it off when taking movies and see if that makes a difference.

I've had a read through her manual and found this.....

Page 80: Section 3: Shoot:

"Please note, however that the sounds made by the camera automatically adjusting the exposure may also be recorded."

We may have the answer?

Cheers :)
