Ive been back and fourth between so many entry level - prosumer level bodies for a while now. Ive been thinking about waiting til the end of Jan to make a final decision (PMA show), but I just cant seem to quit looking at all the cameras out there. Ive been looking on ebay, for new cameras from respected power sellers, and found that the Canon EOS 40D sells for around $1000 - $1200 with 1 or 2 starter lenses, and a bunch of others "bonus" acessories. The 40D has eveything I want in a body, and is pretty new, so im pretty doubtful that Canon will come out with a succssor to it in Jan/Feb. The only thing is that it doesnt offer inbody IS, which is not a killer, since I can just get a lens later on if i cant see to get those crisp shots Im after.
The ebay stores sell the Non-IS lens combo kits with either Canon or Tamron glass. My question is, would I be satisfied with the Canon EF-S 18 - 55mm, 70 - 300mm lens (or the other option of the Tamron lens AF 28 - 80mm, 75 - 300mm)? They dont have IS, but right now it seems that a decent IS lens cant be bought for $200 or less (please correct me if im wrong). I figure that this either one/two kit lense combo would be great for now, and then down the road when I have more money to spend, I can get an IS lens.

What do yall think?

Or should I just get the body for $1000 and then find a lens for around $200.

here is a link to the ebay stuff i was looking at:

Thanks in advance,

well, i guess its a moot point. But I ended up buying the body alone (got it for $999 shipped) and bought a starter lens of off amazon. I got a 18-55 mm Canon IS lens, and also bought a 4GB 133x CF Card (transcend brand, for $39 shipped). What do you guys think?

Im very excited and cant wait to start shooting!

If you are thinking to buy off ebay, are they authorised reseller of Canon ? Wouldn't you doubt of its warranty and quality if you bought off ebay ?

I'm thinking of buying 40D myself from buydig.com , it is one of the featured seller from this website with 5 star rating, their price is $1149 excluding shipping from US.

Redvette where did you get $999 shipped for its body !? We are talking US$ aren't we ?

hoho..

I found the 40D on ebay (reputable guy, 18,000+ items sold and over 99% positive feedback) selling the 40D for $999 shipped. Pretty good deal! The box has never been opened either, so im not to worried about the warrantee not being valid. My reasoning is, if you go to the store and buy this camera, how would canon know who you bought it from? A store on ebay or bestbuy...im sure they would honor it as long as it hasnt been already registered or something shady like that.

I also found these guys, http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=902244 , they are selling the body only for $499! I called them to check if this was correct, and it was, only...its not a "retail package" and that means it ONLY comes with the body, no battery, no cables, no cd, no nothing basically. They have a retail package for $1099, but i dont know if that was before shipping or not, and they seem pretty sketch from the get-go, so id pass. Things that are too good to be true, usually are.

(gahhhhhh....cant wait for the camera to get here already!... :) )
