I am totally new to DSLR, so please forgive me if this is a stupid thing to ask. If I have the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-200 VR, why would I need a fixed lens? I have heard lots of people rave about the 50 mm/1.8 or 1.4, and I realize on my camera it would be a manual focus, but do I need it for indoor photos without a flash, or would I be better served to buy a Speedlight 400? I am wanting to achieve natural light looking indoor photos. I have tried adjusting the onboard flash, but still get an unnatural look.Hopefully, my question makes sense. Thank you!

The 50mm would be great for low-light indoor shots without flash, although you would have to manual focus. I would suggest picking up an SB-600 or SB-800. They will offer you much more flexibility than the SB-400 would. The Nikon speedlights are simply amazing and if used correctly, look just like natural light. The on board flash isnt very usefull.

Sometimes the flash can make a harsh light. I used my 50mm lens to take pictures of my friend's newborn baby in natural light. (I used the light coming in the window.) Look in the D40 picture thread, and you will find them there. I think also the fact that it is a very inexpensive lens helps sell it.

Yeah, I just ordered this lens too...as I hate using the on-board flash. Hopefully manual focus wont be to big of an issue, I cant imagine it being so. lol
