View Full Version : Should One Wait For The (possible) New Caneras?

When we talk about electronics there is always something coming out to make what you just purchased outdated three months later. Perhaps with cameras that is not quite true; however, I am just wondering if it wouldn't be prudent to wait a few months to see if Nikon is really coming out with the D60 (as heavily rumored) or if Canon is replacing the Rebel xti. I want a new camera and was set to choose between the d40x and the xti; however, I can afford to wait till Spring to see what's being replaced and if the replacements can do things that the replaced units cannot do (or do them better). Just wondering if you guys agree (or disagree) with this thought?
Thanks

I personally am waiting until spring to see the difference between the XTi replacement and the 40D, and plan on purchasing one of the two to replace my XT. I don't have anything important to take pictures of until then (it's too cold and windy to really go outside until then), and it's a pretty sure thing that announcements are coming. And if Nikon came out with something really special, I could be swayed by them too (I don't have many lenses).

I guess that's my point: if I needed a camera tomorrow or next month I would buy the 40x or the xti - I can hold off until late Spring - therefore, I may as well wait to see what the new cameras bring to the table. I also figure on a worst case scenario that even if there are not major improvements - the 40x and xti will be discounted heavily.

If you are waiting for the latest and greatest, there is always something better coming down the road. What if Nikon does come out with a D60, and there are rumors of the D70, will you wait for that? When you buy a piece of equipment it is out-dated already, decide what you want and get off the fence.

Well squirt, the D70 can be had for very little already :P
If you have a camera now, you can wait however long you like... but without camera, all that waiting will have you photoless.
So, something personal to decide upon.
The XTi/400d will very likely be followed up around the end of february.

If the next thing is not too far off, I would wait, as I am doing with regard to the K10D body - though that one is not likely to get any cheaper. Have camera, don't need another - right now. If new ones were still 8 months away, get something now...based on the lenses you want.

Yeah, it's true, the K10D is definitely the best deal right now for a full-featured midrange DSLR. Heck, it can be had body only for less than I paid for my D40 this last summer!

I think you missed my point: obviously in electronics there will always be something right around the corner; however, when there is news of an imminent change then it is prudent to wait for that change. Sure, if there is a D60 and its far better than the d40x and if it's within three months of its release and the D70 (if there is one) will not be released until 2009 or 2010 then it's a a no brainer!

Look, these are the winter months, the holidays are gone, and unless you've got a "hot" shoot to consider, I would wait until after PMA 2008 (http://www.pmai.org/index.cfm/ci_id/1198/la_id/1.htm), in Las Vegas (31 days to go), and then buy into the best camera available in your budget range. Normally, I would advise people to go with the mid-range cameras ... but the gap is closing so rapidly between these ... if an "intro-DSLR camera" comes out with a decent ISO-3200 shot ... that's the winner, in my book. Especially if you have no legacy lenses to support.
It's going be a long time before we see another break through that will widen the gap between any of these APS-C sensor cameras.
"Full-frame" is the new game in town, come Summer 2008, the market-share race will be on.

I think you already know what you want to do based on your response.
Personally, I bought a K10D this week with full knowledge that a K20D and possibly a K10D Super will be released next month. I don't believe there will be much more significant discounting to the K10D from current levels ($529 body only), and I wouldn't pay the price premium for either one of the newcomers.
I just want a DSLR to shoot with, and from reviewing sample galleries the K10D will fit my needs perfectly fine. I generally think the operator makes a bigger difference than the equipment, though.
I have to ask - what things do you think the replacements can do that the d40 or xti cannot?
