Im a teenager who dips in and out of photography, whether this is the lack of a decent camera, I don't know. I got a film SLR when I was younger and learnt alot, but had to stop because of the lack of funds for film and processing. However I picked up my uncles new fuji on Christmas day and thought WOW. Like many young people I love gadgets and the D40/ D40x have caught my eye for some time always having wanted a D-SLR since I knew they existed. I currently have a Canon A530 (I think) it offers manual control, which I love, but being a compact the small lens means longer shutter speeds or higher ISO indoors and there is a lack of element of control on it aswell. So for this birthday mother has offered me a D40 (providing I use my phone less) simply because its the most affordable D-SLR, but a deal in a shop i've seen has prompted her to offer the D40x aswell (just the body and 18-55mm lens kit). So my question is am I ready for a D-SLR (I loved my film one) and D40 or D40x given I won't be buying extra lenses and price isnt going to affect me...

It's difficult to answer this question without knowing what you're going to be shooting. Unless you're going to be doing heavy cropping and making mid/large-sized prints with those crops, you're going to get much better value with the D40. If I were you, I'd try to talk mom into getting you the D40 with an extra Nikkor 55-200 mm VR lens, which is running at a very low $200 right now. That'll give you a lot more zoom. Nikon is running a special on its 55-200 mm VR lens with the D40/D40x/D80 through the end of the month.

The D40 is a great camera and im sure you will enjoy it, my vote goes for the D40 double kit( 18-55 and 55-200VR).

Can you get the D40 18-55 and 55-200 cheaper than the D40x 18-55, because if not it'll be either of the single lens kits.
As for what I shoot, I love macro photography but wont be able to afford a lens till a few years possibly but I could get a start with the kit lens I suppose. But I love to try my hand at anything I can really, or just when the family go out for the day, for the memories.
The thing is would the 10 mp make any difference when it comes to cropping shots of flowers etc or will I get enough detail from the 6 mp?
File size also makes no difference as I will be buying an external hard drive to keep all of the photos on... our computer hard drive only has 2gb free...

I would also go for this over the D40x with only one lens. It doesn't sound like you will be printing big, so MP doesn't matter.

Be advised that the D40 doesn't come in a kit with the 55-200mm VR, unless it has been repackaged by some store. The D40 two-lens kit comes with a cheap and inferior older version of the 55-200mm, without VR.
I think you'll love to have a DSLR, personally. At least I do.;)
