My D300 has an option in the menu for RAW recording. 12bit or 14 bit. which will be better?

Refering to threads on another forum (as if there is another forum),
Most see the difference as minimal, also causes the fps to drop drastically fwiw.

If you're going to convert to JPEG it probably doesn't matter (JPEG is 8 bit, right?), if you're converting to TIFF (16 bit, ...I think) you may want to use the 14 bit RAW.
Either way, you probably won't notice much of a difference. I would use the 12 bit and if you find it lacking switch later.

Well,
From a purely mathematical point of view, the 2 bits will make a tremendous difference in how much data can be stored. Now, whether the actual sensor is going to produce enough reliable resolution or not is the question. However, theoretically, you might want to use the extra couple of bits when you have a scene with very high dynamic range. It might help you to have that extra info around for your conversion...
Mangler, you may be missing the whole point of shooting raw rather than jpg. There is a large advantage, and it lies in the fact that you can map the data how you want. In other words, you have more information around to be manipulated to get the image the way you want it to look. You decide what information is ignored when you convert to jpg - not the camera.
